Ethiopia
Award-winning independent filmmaker who, in 2009, directed, produced and edited Dead Weight, a long narrative, and Twilight Revelations: Episodes in the Life and Times of Emperor Haile Selassie, a long documentary. After Tumult, his first long narrative that was screened at over 40 international film festivals, he edited and co-produced the 2013 Asni, a long documentary about Asnaketch Worku, the preeminent actor and singer who dominated the Ethiopian stage and airwaves between the mid 1950s and early 2000s.
Demissie is currently in postproduction of The Quantum Leapers: Ethiopia 1930-1975, a
social history documentary series on the Emperor Haile Selassie era. He is also developing …And Then the Rains Return, a narrative feature set in Ethiopia during the 1918 influenza pandemic.
Demissie is also an associate professor at New York University where he teaches narrative and documentary production, screenwriting and directing.
